Christmas Past

Yes, it’s getting here. Office parties, friendly gatherings, and shopping were all on the agenda for us the last week or so and will continue in the coming days.

I think of the old days.

It’s now much different than my years in high school and college. I spent my years of high school in military school just north of Greensboro at Oak Ridge Military Academy, and college attending Wake Forest in total from 1969 through 1978.

Christmas break was the absolute relief from finishing high school, college, and law school final exams!

Ellerbe never looked so good. Behind me was the world of school, long hours, and institutional food, and in front of me was the Christmas prime rib roast, casseroles, Mom’s homemade coconut layer cake, and our neighbor’s homemade stuffed breakfast sausage.

It’s funny how certain things about Christmas just stick out in your mind after almost half a century.

My Dad suffered a massive stroke my first year in military school in 1969, and my Uncle Elsie, my second Dad, passed in 1972. The doctors at Chapel Hill told us Dad would never be able to hunt or fish again by himself. He would be pretty much an invalid. They really didn’t know who they were dealing with, though, and by the time Uncle Elsie had passed away, it was me riding around in that old Jeep over Christmas break, along with a Dad who was decisively proving the doctors wrong.

We could still muster up two or three decent English Pointers, and that old silver 1969 Jeep Wagoneer still eased around the sandy trails here. Dad and good friend Mike Craven, who was my age and a former classmate at Ellerbe school and supplanted me in the driver’s seat of the Jeep while I was off in military school and college, usually came along for our Christmas hunting outings. The Dad that doctors said would never be able to do much of anything had fooled the docs, and honestly, he almost completely recovered from the effects of his stroke and could outshoot me once again if he had a mind to.

Yes, after a few bumpy years of family sickness and sorrows, Christmas break once again was filled with at least a portion of each day easing around the fields and woody edges of this farm following the fluid, smooth gait of beautiful English Pointers.

Once again, Christmas break just felt good again………….

I want it to feel good for you and your child or children or nephews or nieces or just special friends.
